Japan 🇯🇵

Japan is a country that enchants you in many amnements. From its bustling cities to its temples to its beautiful nature. Tokyo, the capital, is a fascinating mix of modern skyscrapers versus centuries-old traditions. In districts like Shibuya and Shinjuku, life goes on day and night! Brightly lit streets full of stores, restaurants, thousands of people and so much atmosphere. A few stops further you’ll find yourself in Asakusa, here you’ll find peace in the Senso-ji temple, one of the oldest and most visited temples in the city. Very special.

Kyoto, the former imperial capital, offers a completely different experience. Here it seems as if time has stood still. The city is known for its traditional wooden machiya houses, serene Zen gardens, and countless temples and shrines, such as the Kinkaku-ji, the famous Golden Pavilion. The Gion district, with its narrow streets and historic tea houses, is one of the few places where you might still catch a glimpse of a geisha.

In addition to culture, Japan also has impressive nature. Often surrounded by mist and mystery, the iconic Mount Fuji offers one of the country’s most recognizable and beloved views. In spring, people come from far and wide to admire the cherry blossoms (sakura), an event celebrated with picnics under the flowering trees all over the country. Japan is a country where tradition and modernity go hand in hand, where you can experience both the vibrant energy of the city and the serene tranquility of the countryside. Whether you are fascinated by history, nature, or culinary riches, Japan has something unique for everyone.

The culinary journey through Japan is a story in itself. From a quick bowl of ramen to the refined flavors of a kaiseki meal, Japanese cuisine never ceases to surprise you. Each region has its own specialties, and discovering local dishes like the savory okonomiyaki or fresh sushi is an adventure as memorable as the sights themselves.

Japan has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons, making it an attractive destination year-round. Spring (March to May) is one of the best times to visit, especially during the cherry blossom season, when the country is covered in delicate pink blossoms. Autumn (September to November) offers mild temperatures and spectacular autumn colors in nature. Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid, but is ideal for festivals and exploring the coastlines. Winter (December to February) is perfect for snow lovers, especially in the Japanese Alps and on Hokkaido.

Public transportation in Japan is unparalleled in efficiency and convenience. The famous Shinkansen (high-speed trains) connect major cities, making it easy to explore the entire country. In the cities themselves, the subway and train are the most common means of transportation, and they always run on time. For short distances, you can also use buses or cabs, all of which are known for their cleanliness and reliability. Apps such as Hyperdia and Google Maps make planning your trip easy and stress-free.

Japanese cuisine is world-famous and offers a diversity of flavors and textures. Sushi and ramen are of course the most famous dishes, but be sure to try other specialties such as tempura (deep-fried vegetables and seafood), okonomiyaki (savory pancake), and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). Don’t forget to try local specialties in each region you visit, such as Kobe steak in Kobe or Hida beef in Takayama. And for those with a sweet tooth, there are traditional treats like mochi and dorayaki that are not to be missed!

The most important festival in Japan is Oshogatsu, the Japanese New Year, which takes place from Jan. 1 to 3. This is a time when families get together, visit temples, and eat traditional dishes to celebrate the new year. Other important holidays include Hanami in spring, when people admire the blossoming cherry blossoms, and Obon in August, a festival where the spirits of ancestors are commemorated with dances and lanterns.
