Located close to the equator, Indonesia has a tropical climate and can basically be visited year-round. Generally, the best time to visit is from May to September during the dry season. The rainy season, which generally runs from October to April, can sometimes bring heavy rains, but temperatures remain warm.
In Indonesia’s major cities, such as Jakarta and Surabaya, buses, trains and cabs are available. For shorter distances, there are also bajajs (three-wheeled motor vehicles) and ojeks (motorcycle cabs). Ferries run between islands, and domestic flights are also available. Services such as Grab and Gojek also offer transportation by car and motorcycle.
Indonesian cuisine is hugely diverse and rich in flavors. Try Nasi Goreng, a popular fried rice dish, or Satay, grilled meat skewers. For a sweet treat, try colorful rice desserts such as Klepon. Also, don’t forget to try local fruits such as Durian and Mangosteen.
One of the biggest holidays in Indonesia is Lebaran (also known as Idul Fitri), which marks the end of Ramadan. During this time, many people may travel to visit their families, so it is good to take this into account when planning your trip. Other important holidays include Independence Day (Aug. 17) and Nyepi (Balinese New Year), which is celebrated with a day of silence.
